A family of eight tells News 3 they were randomly fired on as they passed through Blue Diamond and Decatur early Tuesday morning.

Law enforcement sources say three more cars were hit at the same intersection during the same time.

Police say someone is firing a BB gun at motorists.

A vacation to Legoland started off badly for the Fernandez family as they began their trek to California on Tuesday. Samantha Fernandez says someone fired on their SUV as they passed through the intersection of Blue Diamond and Decatur.

"We were driving at 4 a.m. down Blue Diamond," she said. "Then we took a right onto Decatur. We heard a bang on our car. We thought a rock had hit our car.”

The family decided to pull over to check the crack suddenly appearing on the side passenger window.

Fernandez said, “We heard another bang on our car. We realized someone was shooting at our car.”

She says her SUV was jam-packed with her husband, six kids and all of their vacation gear. She says she's thankful and very lucky the projectiles that hit her SUV did not hit her children.

Fernandez said, “We were pretty shocked. We have six kids in the car. We were heading to Legoland and one of our son’s heads was laying on the window that got shot at.”

Police say the shooting is being investigated and that three other vehicles were also hit around the same time. Police say a BB gun was used and they have no suspect description.

Two years ago, a similar car shooting occurred at this same intersection. While investigators said at the time they had their suspicions, no one was ever arrested in that incident. Sources say it's possible Tuesday's shooting could be related.

Residents in the area are concerned.

Neighbor Jared Wren said, “Yeah, it's a concern. We don’t live too far from here and we don’t get that around here very often. I feel like this is a safe part of the community.”

Neighbor Korye Blackman said, “I don’t know why anyone would do that. It really doesn’t make any sense.”

Fernandez hopes the person randomly firing on cars is caught before someone gets hurt.

Fernandez said, “I’m very thankful none of them got hit. It shattered our window but it didn’t puncture all the way through. We were blessed for that.”
