The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department discussed Monday details from the officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday, June 14, in the 2300 block of S. Hualapai Way near Sahara Avenue.

Assistant Sheriff Brett Zimmerman says that around 9:40 p.m. officers were called to a gas station at Sahara Avenue and S. Hualapai Way to investigate reports for a person with a gun.

Officers discovered that a man, later identified as 39-year-old Joseph Delucco, had pointed a gun at another person in the gas station’s parking lot before walking into another business nearby.

As officers began to approach the business, Delucco exited and ran. Officers pursued Delucco to a wall outside of an apartment complex.

One of the officers, identified as Officer Kranjcevich, turned the corner and saw Delucco had a firearm in his hand and threw it over the wall.

Officer Daniel Kranjcevich fired once from his duty weapon and ordered Delucco to show his hands.

Delucco dropped to his knees and reached for his waistband.

Officer Kranjcevich fired four more times, hitting Delucco.

Delucco was taken into custody before being transported to UMC Trauma.

He was booked in absentia for carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited person in possession of a firearm and probation violation.

Officers later found that Delucco was the suspect in a kidnapping and robbery of a victim who had fled from the gas station just prior to the officers’ arrival.

He had held the victim at gunpoint and forced the victim to frive to an ATM demanding $600 in cash.

The victim pulled into the gas station and started honking the horn before running away while yelling that Delucco had a gun.

Assistant Sheriff Zimmerman said, "When you drive to these ATMs on the major thoroughfares, although they may be well lit, there’s sometimes not many people around. Maybe someone in front or back of you, if that. So, driving to a location like this where there are a lot of people, a lot of vehicles, a well-lit convenience store on the corner of a major intersection, the victim did well on this one.”

This is the 10th officer-involved shooting of the year.

The officer’s use of force is under investigation.

Anyone with information should contact the LVMPD Force Investigation Team at 702-828-8452 or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
