Cheyenne High School student arrested with gun in backpack

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — CCSD Police report that a 15-year old student of Cheyenne High School was arrested Wednesday after being found with a gun in his backpack.

Lieutenant Darnell Couthen reports that officers approached a student who was standing near the school at 1 p.m. The student ran from officers, and threw his backpack into a residential yard.

Police recovered the backpack and found a 9mm gun inside. The student was caught, and was arrested for loitering about school property with a dangerous weapon and obstruction.

It is unknown why the student was not at school.

This arrest comes as CCSD has tightened campus security after an unusually high number of guns have been confiscated from students at local schools.
