A new spoofing scam has touched the City of Henderson and residents around the valley.

In a release Tuesday, July 16, the Henderson’s Department of Information Technology warned valley residents to be aware of telephone calls that appear to be coming from the city.

In reality, these calls could be part of a spoofing scam.

Spoofing, for those in need of a refresher, is when a caller deliberately falsifies the name telephone number transmitted to caller ID in order to disguise the caller’s identity.

Henderson officials say that the caller may masquerade as a trustworthy person or organization, but in truth, they intend to defraud, cause harm or wrongly obtain information.

Residents who receive calls that appear to come from the city are advised to ask the caller who they are and what organization they represent.

If the information they provide does not match the caller ID displayed or seems suspicious, hang up.

The City of Henderson wants to remind residents that it does not call residents or businesses demanding money nor to verify personal information.

The Department of Utility Services does use automated calls to contact customers, but these will advise residents to call the Customer Care Center at 702-267-5900.

Acting Chief Information Officer Russell Nelson said in a statement, “Do not engage in conversation and do not provide any personal information such as account numbers, Social Security number, birthdate, mother’s maiden name, passwords or other identifying information.
