A historic route in southern Nevada is back open for hikers and trail runners.

The Historic Railroad Trail that runs to Hoover Dam has reopened, according to the National Park Service.

The third tunnel on the trail was closed for several months due to deterioration of the timber cribbing, park officials said.

For now, cargo containers have been installed for the second and third tunnels to protect visitors from possible falling rocks. Ramps are also in place to make sure the trail remains accessible.

Engineers from the Federal Highway Administration have studied all five tunnels on the trail, and park staff are working on long-term recommendations.

The historic trail starts near the Alan Bible Visitor Center and runs 7.5 miles, ending at Hoover Dam.
