Researchers from the Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University found that fathers who have healthy lifestyle practices could have a major impact on their children’s health.

The study also shows that men who exercise moderately a month before conception could give their children a head start on a healthy metabolism and lower the risk of diabetes and obesity.

Josiah Larowe with the American Cancer Society says the healthy lifestyle can also lower the risk of cancer in men.

“Knowing your body, maintaining a healthy active lifestyle and eating healthy are some of the best ways to prevent cancers of all types,” said Larowe.

The American Cancer Society estimates that just under 2,700 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year; a cancer commonly found in women.

Marcella Williams with The Juice Standard says certain foods men are putting in their body can aid in prevention.

“[...] something as simple as lycopene, which is an antioxidant that is found in certain fruits and vegetables, specifically red or pink ones like tomatoes or watermelon,” said Williams.

In addition to breast cancer, Larowe says men also are at risk for prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and the number one diagnosed cancer which is skin cancer.

He says consuming the recommended dose of five fruits and vegetables a day can help lower your risk of lots of different cancers.
