Scorpion Season: Summerlin infestation could be caused by mild winter weather

One Summerlin woman says she's had exterminators from Preventative Pest Control out to her home more times than she can count.

It hasn't helped and now she is taking a different approach to hopefully get rid of this problem for good.

"At night when I'm asleep, they're on the walls and I can't live like that," Patricia Mogg said.

Mogg says she's seen scorpions in her yard in the past, but she has never seen so many and inside her home before.

"I sat down on the couch and one bit me on the leg and my face swelled up and I ended up in the emergency room," she said.

The exterminator has visited her home at least twice a month, according to Mogg, but the infestation hasn't been remedied.

Now, some of her neighbors are having the same problem.

Andreas Sparkuhl lives across the street from Mogg.

"My wife was recently stung in the house. I've killed 15 probably in the past two weeks," he said.

Sparkuhl says he's also seen an increase in the number of scorpions in his yard and inside his home.

Instead of calling an exterminator, Sparkuhl is taking matters into his own hands.

He says, "The only efficient way to get rid of scorpions is to go out with the black light and hunt them."

Patricia Mogg says, "I am allergic to them, so I have a bigger fear than he does."

After numerous failed exterminator visits, Mogg finally hired someone to come with a black light and hunt the scorpions down.

She also plans to have her home sealed off, and she has a word of advice for other homeowners: "Stay on top of it. Don't let it build up. Constantly have your exterminator coming out."

According to Global Pest Services, the valley area is going to see a spike in scorpions this year.

Due to the mild winter, there wasn't a hard freeze to kill the scorpions off, so valley residents are being encouraged to take preventative measures.

Preventive Pest Control sent us the following statement:

On October 2nd, Ms. Mogg called us to make us aware that she had seen a scorpion in her home. Standing behind our industry leading guarantee, we promptly sent our technician to asses the problem and correct it free of charge. This was the first time this year she has ever needed an additional service outside of her regular service schedule. Knowing the problem scorpions can be, we promptly scheduled and completed a black light service at her home to make sure we knew the extent of the problem and correct it as quickly as possible. To ensure she does not see any more scorpions in her home in the future we also recommended that she have us complete a home seal which we are currently scheduled to complete. After speaking with Ms. Mogg today she has nothing but praise for the excellent service we have provided her. She recommends Preventive Pest Control and as a valued customer of over 15 years, she definetly knows us.
