A woman shot and killed a man who accosted her as she was returning home Tuesday night, Phoenix police say.

Police believe the man was trying to rob her.

Witnesses told police the man grabbed the woman as she was trying to enter her residence in the 19400 block of Seventh Street shortly after 11 p.m., according to Sgt. Mercedes Fortune, a Phoenix police spokeswoman.

The woman tried to close the door as the man repeatedly attempted to force his way in. Once inside, she retrieved a gun and shot at him, Fortune said.

The man fled but was later located at a hospital, where he had been pronounced dead. Fortune said the woman was uninjured in the attack.

Police do not believe the woman knew the assailant. His name had not been released as of Wednesday morning, but Fortune said he was 34 years old.

Police are investigating the case as a homicide.
