A collision on U.S. 60 east of Phoenix closed eastbound lanes at Gilbert Road just before 9 a.m. on May 23, 2018.

A multi-vehicle collision that left one person critically injured closed eastbound U.S. 60 at Gilbert Road in Mesa on Wednesday morning.

The critically injured person was rushed to a trauma hospital, according to Deputy Mesa Fire Chief Forrest Smith. Firefighters treated three other people with minor injuries at the scene.

The collision occurred at about 8 a.m. Wednesday morning and involved six vehicles, according to Quentin G. Mehr, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman.

Mehr said a broken-down vehicle was blocking the third inside lane of traffic. Two vehicles slowed down to avoid a crash, but one failed to stop in time, causing a chain-reaction collision, Mehr added.

The investigation is ongoing, but impairment is not suspected, Mehr said.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said in a tweet that the closure extended from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive. It had partially reopened by 11 a.m.
