Forest guards at frontline in fight against deforestation: PCCF

WILLIAMNAGAR: Meghalaya’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Y. Shullai on Monday said that the forest personnel’s should always hone their skill and knowledge in order to discharge their duty efficiently.

“Training of forest personnel’s especially frontline staffs are of utmost importance when we are to fight the menace of deforestation and global warming everyday”, said Shullai, while addressing at the 23rd Convocation of Meghalaya Forest Training School at Baija in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills.

He said that the basic training imparted at MFTS Williamnagar equips the frontline staffs with knowledge and skills to mane the forest resources.

The MFTS is the nodal training institute under the Department of Forest and Environment, Government of Meghalaya, wherein foresters and forest guard undergo 11 months of training.

This year, a total of 14 frontline staffs completed the basic training course. Sharmila Rai topped the course with an aggregate of 86.93 percent.

As part of the convocation, different cultural activities were held at the campus including March past by the passing out trainees of the school.

Amongst those who were present at the convocation ceremony included Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Climate Change, Research and Training) Dr. Subhash Ashutosh and Principal MFTS Arpiyush Sangma.
