SHILLONG: The construction of the much awaited Tura medical college, which will have 100 medical seats, is in progress.
An official with the Health Department said work is in full swing at Doldegre, 8 km from Tura, after the government released Rs 23 crore.
Earlier, the Centre had sanctioned Rs 189 crore for Tura Medical College and the revised estimate presented to the Centre by the state is Rs 244 crore.
The land allotted for construction is 100 acres.
However, there is delay in the construction of Shillong Medical College as a new MoU will have to be signed after the site was changed to Umsawli from Jhalupara.
The KPC Group from Kolkata will construct the medical college on a PPP mode.
Though the foundation stone for the construction of the college was laid at Reid Chest Hospital premises in Jhalupara by former chief minister Mukul Sangma on December 6, 2017, the KPC Group has agreed to shift the site to Umsawli.
The cost of the project is around Rs 400 crore.
The decision to shift the medical college site to Umsawli was taken by the government as the buildings meant to accommodate the TB patients at Umsawli lacked in certain specifications.
Hence, the patients will remain in Jhalupara and the medical college will be constructed at Umsawli after an additional 5-acre land was allotted to the firm.
“We are processing the additional land allotment,” the official added.
