3 deaths from drowning in Garo Hills

TURA: Three persons, including a teenage boy and an infant, have drowned under tragic circumstances in three separate incidents across the Garo Hills region.

While the body of an infant who went missing three days ago in a river was retrieved from Chokpot region today, a teenager lost his life in a swimming pool at the popular Tree house resort in Tura. The third case of drowning occurred at the Rongkusi tourist and picnic spot in Jengjal where a man was swept away by the water currents.

The 16 year old boy from Hawakahana locality of Tura, Rohan Hajong, was reportedly playing in the swimming pool of the popular Tree House Resort at Tura when he drowned.

According to police, the lifeless body of the teenager was rushed to nearby Holy Cross Hospital on Saturday afternoon where doctors declared him brought dead.  This is the second instance of drowning at the Tree House Resort run by the Rikman Continental Hotel.

Last year, another young boy from Assam who came with a group of friends to the resort also drowned at the same swimming pool. There were accusations against the management about the lack of a life guard at the pool and many complained about the depth of the pool.

In the Jengjal incident, 37 year old William M Sangma from nearby Warisepgre village was reportedly bathing close to the water fall at Rongkusi tourist and picnic spot on Saturday afternoon when the strong water currents pulled him down.

“Our fire and rescue service team reached the spot and we have also dispatched a State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) team to find the body,” informed West Garo Hills police chief MGR Kumar.

The district police chief also informed that a team will look into the circumstances the 16 year boy drowned at the Tree House Resort.

In Chokpot, three year old infant Kasabio Ch Marak of Rampragre village was swept away by the waters of the river Dareng at Sadaghat Wari after he followed his mother who had gone to the river for a bath on July 24th afternoon.

His body was found downstream near Mitapgre village after three days of search.
