Sonowal asks GMC to preserve Guwahati water bodies

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today asked Guwahati Municipal Corporation to map, preserve and beautify the natural water bodies in and around Guwahati to balance the ecological quotient of the city that has witnessed very fast urbanisation.

He also asked the GMC authority to grant the building permission swiftly.

Sonowal chaired a meeting to review the solid waste management of system of the GMC at its conference hall in presence Guwahati Development Minister, Siddhartha Bhattacharyya.,

The CM said Chief Minister Sonowal said that the water bodies of the city have to be preserved and solid waste management system should not fail the purpose.  He called for concerted steps to map the water bodies in and around the city and beautify them amid burgeoning urbanization to balance the ecological quotient of the city.

Sonowal said that though the problem artificial floods have eased phenomenally owing to the appropriate actions by the government, GMC has to remain ever vigilant to remove the causes that are potentially responsible for occurrence of flash flood in the city.

He also said that GMC must find out ways and means for creating new parking lots in the city areas and asked Corporation officials to chalk out an enduring and futuristic communication system in view of the ever-increasing number of vehicles and commuters in Guwahati.

He also asked the GMC authorities to look for new and pragmatic avenues for increasing revenue generation to lend self-sustenance to GMC.

Sonowal asked the GMC authority to start drinking water scheme by the end of the current year.
