CHENNAI: If you are interested in understanding criminal behaviour and how legal systems work, then this course could be for you. The Indian Forensic Organisation and IFO Forensic Standards and Research Pvt Ltd will be conducting a training course in forensic psychology in Chennai. The two-month course will be held in October and November this year.
“You don’t need a degree in psychology to sign up for the course.
Anyone who is above 18 years of age and interested in criminal psychology can apply,” says course instructor Joulyn Kenny, adding that similar courses have been held in Mumbai and Delhi.
The course, which will be held every Sunday from 10am to 2pm, will give an introduction to the key elements of forensic psychology, including causes of criminal behaviour, different types of crime, psychology and the courtroom, offender profiling, and the management and treatment of offenders.
It will also examine the roles and responsibilities of forensic psychologists in police work, criminal investigation, eyewitness identification, mental defenses and competency issues, sexual abuse issues, juvenile forensics and death penalty cases. There is a fee of Rs 12,000.
“After two or three classes, we have a mid-term exam. A criminal profiling project is done independently by each student, and a final exam is also held, after which certificates are awarded,” says Kenny.
According to her, they have got people from different backgrounds joining the course. “Students of psychology sign up to get an understanding of what forensic psychology is so that they can decide if they want to pursue it for their masters’ degree in or even take it up as a career,” says Kenny, adding that they also get crime writers and journalism students.
