Pig menace strikes Walled City

Pig menace strikes Walled City
Pig population has multiplied manifold in the city
JAIPUR: Pig menace is on rise in the Pink City, especially in the Walled City areas where thousands of local and international tourists visit every day for monuments and heritage walk.
Deputy mayor Manoj Bhardwaj too highlighted the issue in the general body meeting (GBM) on Friday. He said that the pig population has multiplied manifold and in the absence of infrastructure, the civic body is not able to put an end to the menace in Walled City area.
“There are no yards in the city where these stray pigs can be kept,” he said.
“It’s giving bad name to the city as tourists coming to Jaipur are clicking pictures of pigs on roads instead of monuments. Several calls were made to officials to prevent stray animals from wandering on heritage walk way. However, nothing has been done in this regard.”
At present, JMC does not have the skill or a large team to catch the pigs. Disposal of garbage in open spaces, coupled with unbridled breeding of pigs in old city are the root causes for the menace.
Rajesh Biwal, another BJP councillor facing similar problem in his ward in the Walled City area said, “Pigs enter the houses of people at night and squeal loudly. Sometimes, they also attack kids. The state government should allot land where the pigs can be kept.”
