LUCKNOW: Working on the loopholes in the process to make Aadhaar cards, special task force of UP Police busted on Sunday a 10-member gang which was instrumental in making thousands of fake Aadhaar IDs in the state.
The leader of the gang worked for a private enrolment agency. UIDAI empanels certain companies to run registration centres on the ground and authorises them to collect data on its behalf.
Kanpur resident Saurabh Singh ran one such centre and used to make fake Aadhaar cards by inserting random or duplicate biometrics into the system, charging individuals Rs 5,000 each for the job.
The gang's kingpin, who is on the run, had bagged the contract from UIDAI while Saurabh and the others arrested used to work under him in different parts of the state. The gang used to fake fingerprints through photopolymer and load the data on the master server as it was given access details of the applicants. STF IG Amitabh Yash said UIDAI had cancelled recently 80 lakh Aadhaar cards and the said vendor had been blacklisted.
“We have yet to gauge the exact number but we need to understand that the gang had a presence in Kanpur, Lucknow, Mainpuri, Fatehpur, Hardoi, Azamgarh, Deoria and Kushinagar,“ added Yash.
Unique IDs assigned to Saurabh and other operators were flagged down and since June 12, 2017, the gang became redundant. Meanwhile, UIDAI deputy director approached ASP Triveni Singh, the nodal officer of STF's cyber police station and lodged an FIR against the group.
Singh said the gang had roped in a coding expert to bypass security features of the Aadhaar enrolment system and managed to provide same set of biometrics for different persons.

The gang was booked under IPC sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471, 473, 474 and IT Act had been pressed against them. A team of five policemen under inspector Abhinav Singh Pundir had been formed to nab the remaining accused and the key vendor, added DIG STF Manoj Tiwari.
