KOLKATA: The daughter and son-in-law of the 68-year-old Shipra Bhattacharya, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her Behala home on Saturday were arrested on charges of murdering the old woman and allegedly forging a suicide note, that police suspect was written on a page from lady’s grandson’s school notebook.
Police said, Kaberi Bhattacharya (37) and her husband Anupam (41) confessed to have strangulated the woman and smothered her to death before hanging her body with a ceiling fan in an attempt to pass off the death as a suicide.
The reason – the widow had allegedly refused to part with the money she got from her husband’s pension to meet the monthly expenses of the couple.
Acting on a complaint lodged by Sujay Krishna Bhadra, the younger brother of the elderly woman, police questioned the Kaberi and her husband for long hours through Saturday as their statements often differed. They could not explain the reason why their mother was depressed, their own movements hours before the death of their mother and why their mother will bolt one door while trying to commit suicide but keep the other two open.
When the preliminary post mortem report reached the police late in the evening, suggesting the woman was strangulated and smothered before she was hanged, they grilled he two further, when they broke down and were subsequently arrested late in the night.
According to police, the post mortem report mentions that the woman died due to “violent asphyxia because of manual strangulation and smothering.” Cops believe that she was smothered using a pillow before being strangulated to death.
