Lucknow boy and Karachi bride tie the knot
LUCKNOW: Fighting all odds to make a home together, Karachi girl Sadia (25) and Lucknow boy Shariq Hashmi (28) finally exchanged wedding vows in a quaint family ceremony at his Golaganj home on Tuesday evening.
The couple had already made two failed attempts at getting Indian visas for her mother, brother and Sadia herself. It was when their story was picked up by TOI, first from Hyderabad and then from Lucknow, and tweeted, that the home minister's office (HMO) took notice, sought details and gave the couple a positive response in the form of visa to India.
The Pakistani bride and her family arrived in Lucknow on August 21.
On Tuesday, amid family and friends, Shariq, dressed in a cream coloured sherwani, and Sadia, in her red bridal ensemble, signed the nikahnama.
Shariq told TOI, “The past year has been a long journey. Ever since TOI came in and got our case to reach the HMO, everything happened in quick succession and we are finally getting married.“ Sadia and Shariq were to get married on August 1 after getting engaged in 2012. The only problem was rejection of Sadia's visa twice in a year. When the TOI reported the issue on July 4 and 5, it was noticed by the HMO which sought details on July 13.
In the next few days, Sadia and her family's application details were forwarded from HMO to the ministry of external affairs (MEA).
“Home minister Rajnath Singh spoke directly to minister of external affairs Sushma Swaraj on the issue and she gave her word on the visa. The Indian high commission was informed by the MEA and the process was finalised,“ said an HMO official.
