LUCKNOW: As LU hostellers blocked the University Road and ghearoed vice-chancellor's residence after they were not served lunch in the central mess on Sunday , the VC caught a non-LU student among protesters and handed him over to the police. However, the youth was later released.
“The role of police was disappointing. They released the youth whom I had caught for creating ruckus,“ said vice-chancellor SP Singh.
Hasanganj police inspector PK Jha, however, said the boy was released because LU did not file any written complaint against him.
This was the second occasion when LU VC complained about lack of cooperation from police. On August 1, the VC had tweeted, tagging the chief minister's office as well, seeking police help when some students had laid siege to his office. LU officials had alleged that despite repeated calls no police official had come for rescue for an hour.
On Sunday , students' protest disrupted traffic for an hour on the University Road.Later, VC met 10 protesters who told him that all hostellers should not be punished for the fault of a few. The central mess services were revived in the evening on VC's directive.
“I was unwell yet I had outside for food since mess service was suspended on Sunday ,“ said Avinish Singh, a hosteller. LU officials have lodged an FIR against SP student wing leader Apporva Sharma and 15 unidentified students for protest outside VC's residence.
