Punjab Agricultural University Celebrates National Nutrition Week

The faculty and students of Department of Food and Nutrition, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated “National Nutrition Week” from September 1-7 under the theme "Optimal Infant and Child Feeding Practices: Better Child Health.

LUDHIANA: The faculty and students of Department of Food and Nutrition, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated “National Nutrition Week” from September 1-7 under the theme "Optimal Infant and Child Feeding Practices: Better Child Health." The department organized several activities to intensify nutritional awareness among community.
Lectures-cum-demonstrations were given in local schools including Government Senior Secondary School, PAU, Gobind Nagar and GGN Public School to generate awareness on the importance of nutrition for health.
In addition, an inter-class quiz competition was conducted in the College of Home Science, PAU. An inter-college cooking competition on “Preparation of Nutritious Snacks for Infants and Pre-School Children” was also organized in which students from local colleges participated. The participants displayed their nutritious and delicious snacks.
Jatinder Gulati, Dean, College of Home Science, gave away prizes to the winners of various competitions. She appreciated the efforts put in by the department for improving the nutritional status of population, which is imperative for national development. She said nutrition is an issue of survival, health and development for current and succeeding generations.
Kiran Grover, Coordinator of the activities, said, “Every year 45 per cent of all child deaths are attributable to malnutrition, which is preventable.” The first 1000 days, from time of conception to first two years of child life are critical period of vulnerability in child health, she observed.
