BOKARO: One person was killed and four students were critically injured after the auto-rickshaw they were travelling in was hit by a speeding vehicle belonging to deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) Poonam Minz on Thursday.
The incident took place at Krishna Moad on Lake road, 500 metres away from the City Police station, when the students were on their way to Bokaro Public School (BPS).
The drivers of both the vehicle and the auto-rickshaw, the students, Minz and her bodyguards sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to Bokaro General Hospital. The auto-rickshaw driver Suresh Yadav succumbed to his injuries later during the day.
Outraged over the incident, locals and students belonging to other schools blocked the road for two hours and vandalised the DSP’s vehicle. It was not until the arrival of a police force and a riot control vehicle that the crowd dispersed. Several policemen were deployed to ensure peace in the area.
Manish Singh, an eyewitness, said, “It was sheer negligence on part of the DSP’s driver.” The DSP was on her way to the high court when the mishap took place.
Deputy commissioner Rai Mahimapat Ray, superintendent of police Y S Ramesh and other officers visited the students and their family in the hospital. Security was also increased at the medical centre.
“A complaint will be lodged against the DSP’s driver at City Police station. The DSP, her bodyguard and the driver are currently undergoing treatment,” Ramesh said.
