Vir Das, crowned the 'King of Standup Comedy in India' by TOI, came to Parlor Live Comedy Club in Bellevue, Washington as part of his World Tour 2017. The show that was held from March 23 to 25, was a 90-minute event attended by 350 people each day.
The show was opened by the quick-witted comedian Gabriel Rutledge, winner of the prestigious Seattle International completion.
Gabriel conquered with his rib-tickling punches and amusing one-liners. Das took the stage some 30 minutes into the event,. His opening lines in Hindi took the American audience by surprise, but they were quickly put to ease after he switched to English.
'Boarding Das' was a houseful event attended by Indians from all walks of life, including office goers, home makers and college students. The show was a mix of issues ranging from politics to media, religion and current affairs. Das is an excellent raconteur and narrated several stories, most of which he claimed were accounts from his own life.
Das was born in India and raised in Lagos and New Delhi. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Theatre from Knox College, Illinois where he spent a few rough years as a student, working part time cleaning dishes in a Chicago fine-dining restaurant. He talked about how he always hoped to get his hands on the delicious steak served in the restaurant but always found himself short of cash. Only after many years of being an established actor/comedian did he visit the restaurant and eat to his heart's content.
Das's act had relevant doses of humor on current affairs and as well as world peace and oneness. He interspersed important and sensitive issues like religion with humor. He spoke of merging Christian and Muslim religious groups as 'Chrislam' to bring about unity and peace among the sects. Das switched back and forth between personal anecdotes and topics of worldly significance.
