Girls in four Providence public schools have access to free feminine hygiene products as part of a pilot program.

Mayor Jorge Elorza and school administrators announced the program Wednesday.

"No student should have to limit their education or miss school activities because they are menstruating," Elorza said in a news release. "Periods are a part of life. When students are forced to disrupt their regular activity, they miss opportunities, it affects their self-esteem, and it reinforces stigma."

The city said products will be in dispensers inside girls and gender-neutral bathrooms at Hope and Classical high schools, and at DelSesto and Nathanael Greene middle schools.

The goal is to have the products at all middle and high schools in Providence.
