Rhode Island police say a man stole a forklift and drove it around a park, at times trying to ram police cruisers, before he got stuck and had to be forcibly removed.

Newport police say 27-year-old Ross Ahlborg, of Narragansett, took the forklift without permission at about 10 p.m. Wednesday and was driving around Fort Adams State Park.

The Newport Daily News reports he eventually got stuck in a muddy area and officers broke the cab’s glass and forcibly removed a struggling Ahlborg.

Ahlborg appeared in court Thursday to face charges including multiple counts of felony assault with a dangerous weapon. He did not enter a plea. A judge ordered him held pending a competency exam.

His family said he had been in a psychiatric hospital and wasn’t taking his medication.
