COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- A day that started with so much positive for the fight for social justice ended with destruction to downtown Columbia.

“I hope at the end of the day we can all come together and say, ‘let’s meet out some justice and the people who did the wrong will have to justify for that,” said Wateree Elementary School principal Dr. Charles King, who owns a condo in downtown Columbia.

While some displayed their emotions through a peaceful protest this afternoon, others expressed themselves in a more reckless way. Creating damage to local restaurants and businesses in and around the Vista.

“If you want something done in America, do it the American way,” said Columbia resident Melinda Winbush, who was part of this afternoon’s peaceful protest at the State House. “White, black, green, yellow, purple – it don’t matter what color you is. Sign (a petition).” But destroy what we have built."

But for those who were part of the destruction who are from Columbia the question is why. Why damage your home?

“What I say to the damage is you have insurance,” explained protester Jasara Chapman. “You can replace those material things. You cannot replace these lives that are gone and gone forever. No it’s not compensating for (it) but hold these law enforcement officers accountable.”
