Jacksonville city crews recently completed work to clear some environmental issues discovered at the Riverwalk Marina construction site.

City officials said crews worked for two days to remove contaminated soil from the area after they found two unmarked tanks underground. Officials said an environmental engineering has taken samples for testing, and Kelley Cannon, the superintendent of the streets division, adds that it was important to take care of the problem.

“An area that definitely needs to be turned back for residence use," he explains. "Such a beautiful area with the park and everything around here. It’s time to get it back to what it needs to be and make sure We are ready for the future for whatever that may be.”

City officials said the site was originally used for turpentine production, but the building was damaged in Hurricane Florence and later demolished.
