On the same day North Carolina State Patrol launched a special operation to emphasize safety around school zones and buses, a Wilmington-area student was injured at the bus stop.

A 7-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries Monday morning after being hit by a car while trying to get on the school bus.

Wilmington ABC affiliate WWAY is reporting that NC Highway Patrol Trooper J. Pierce says the school bus was going east on Porter’s Neck Road just before 7:00 a.m. but was stopped at the time of the incident. He says the stop arm was extended and the red lights were flashing when a car coming from the opposite direction hit the child as he was crossing the street to get on the bus.

The boy was pushed to the ground, hit his head and Pierce says he received some scratches to his face. The student was taken to the hospital and Pierce says he is expected to be okay.

The driver was ticketed for passing a stopped school bus.
