PORTLAND (WGME) – Two separate and peaceful demonstrations happened Friday in Portland.

Demonstrators say they’re glad the former Minnesota officer was arrested, but that more needs to be done.

Minneapolis cop who knelt on man's neck charged with murder

The two separate demonstrations Friday, one started on Marginal Way and another started in Monument Square, both had police blocking traffic.

Demonstrators marched on Congress Street to city hall, chanting references to previous incidents across the country involving black lives lost during encounters with police.

Demonstrators stood for two minutes in silence with their hands in the air. The organizer of this protest told the crowd the discomfort felt in their shoulders is a reminder of the pain George Floyd felt as an officer’s knee was held into his neck.

“It’s crazy,” organizer Wazo Daveed said. “That could’ve been me, that could’ve been one of my friends.”

The organizer of the other protest says justice has not yet been served.

"We want convictions and not just an arrest," organizer Hamdia Ahmed said.

And demonstrators say more action needs to be taken against the other officers involved.

“I think all four of them should be charged with murder, because the other three stood there and watched it happen,” Saco resident Jen Dickstein said. “I personally am a victim of police brutality during my teenage years, and so it definitely happens, and I’m thankful to be alive, so yeah, there was absolutely no need for that, he was already subdued.”

Demonstrators used chalk to draw and spell out expletives on the monument criticizing police.

The Portland Police Department released a statement Friday that they are saddened and disturbed by what happened to George Floyd and that they have training in place to prevent such a tragedy.
