PORTLAND (WGME) – The Maine Episcopal Church has elected its first openly gay, married bishop.

Thomas James Brown will be consecrated at a ceremony Saturday.

Bishop Brown says he we chosen not because he was gay, but because he is the right person, at the right time, for the job.

He was joined Friday by the Episcopal church's presiding bishop, Michael Curry, who happens to be the church's first black bishop.

You may recognize Bishop Curry, he gained fame after delivering a sermon at the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

A consecration service will be held for Bishop Brown at Saint Luke's Church in Portland Saturday at 11 a.m.
