WESTBROOK (WGME) -- The Sappi paper mill in Westbrook plans to lay off dozens of employees this year.

The mill plans to cut 75 workers by the end of the year because the mill is permanently closing one of its paper machines.

About 260 people currently work at the Sappi paper mill.

Some of Maine’s elected leaders are reaching out.

Senator Susan Collins released a statement says in part:

I stand ready to assist any and all affected workers in whatever way I can particularly given the added economic challenges as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

Governor Janet Mills also released a statement, saying the Maine Department of Labor "stands ready to help these employees through this difficult time by providing unemployment insurance, job training, and any other appropriate assistance.”

Dana Doran with the Professional Logging Contractors of Maine says the ripple effect will go far beyond the initial 75 layoffs.

The layoffs come at a difficult time for many who are struggling with unemployment during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Sappi mill isn't alone. Pixelle Specialty Solutions in Jay is laying off 59 workers next week.

The move comes three months after a massive explosion stopped pulp manufacturing.

In a statement, the company manager says they are confident in providing good quality products in a safe and responsible manner during these challenging times.
