PORTLAND (WGME) -- Tyler Wallingford, the Marine from Standish who was shot and killed in South Carolina, will return to Maine Saturday in a procession set to honor his service.
Cpl. Wallingford, 21, was allegedly shot by another Marine about a week ago, officials said.
Standish Fire-EMS Chief Rob Caron said Wallingford's body will arrive in Boston Saturday afternoon, and a procession will proceed along I-95 to Portland.
"It is my understanding that every overpass will be manned with firefighters and a fleet of fire trucks will be lining Rand Rd in Portland when we get off the Turnpike," said Caron in a press release, with the procession expected to head north between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Funeral arrangements have not been released but will be soon, the chief said.
Wallingford grew up in Standish and served as a volunteer firefighter before joining the Marines in 2016. His family has also served as firefighters.
To prepare for today's procession, more than 30 Standish Fire-EMS and Gorham Fire Department members spent Friday washing, waxing and detailing the vehicles to be used today to bring Wallingford home, according to the Standish Fire-EMS Facebook page.
