PORTSMOUTH (WGME) – In New Hampshire, lawmakers are considering a bill to create gun-free school zones.
There has been a similar gun-free zones bill proposed in the past, but it was declined by the New Hampshire Senate.
This time around, supporting lawmakers are eager for the bill that would allow school administrators to define their own policies regarding gun control.
The bill states that it will allow a school district, administrative unit or chartered public school to adopt and enforce a policy regulating firearms, firearms components, ammunition, firearm supplies or knives within that jurisdiction.
Opposing lawmakers argue that this law would fail and make the gun-free schools a target for criminals
One senator said if this is passed, and there were a school shooting, the blood will be on supporters’ hands.
However, advocates contend the zones are a way to protect students from gun violence and ensure a safe learning environment.
The House's Education Committee is expected to vote on the bill next week, and then the full House will make a decision.
