DOVER, NH (WGME) -- Police in New Hampshire are once again reminding drivers about the Broadway Bridge in Dover.

The clearance is only 9’6” too low for the driver of a rented U-Haul truck Wednesday morning.

Neighbors are aware of the bridge's reputation and started shooting video.

"I heard a really loud noise and went and looked out the window and I saw the U-Haul lodged underneath the bridge and I was like, 'Oh no it actually happened!’” neighbor Minta Akkoyun said.

Dover police say this has happened at least 52 times in the past seven years.

"On both sides of the bridge, there are signs that say ‘Low clearance 9'6"’ and there are flashing yellow warning lights," Dover Police Sgt. Gregory Turner said.

And it will continue to happen, officials say because the height can't be changed, with train tracks above and utility lines beneath the road.

The tow truck driver who helped free the U-Haul Wednesday says he's seen his share of destruction there.

"People not paying attention. People saying, 'Maybe I can fit.' I've had drivers tell me, 'Well, I was doing good!'" Guy Verra of Bob’s Auto and Wrecker Service said. "...and you could hurt someone too, that's the biggest part, is because when you hit that bridge it explodes: the box trucks explode. There's particleboard that goes flying and we have to clean up the whole road.”

The bridge sheared the top of the U-Haul truck off like a tin can. As for damage to the bridge, police say drivers are often found at fault in these crashes and are liable for damage.
