NEWARK, NJ -- Police say a school bus driver in New Jersey crashed into a tree while she was apparently under influence of drugs.

Witnesses say she smashed into a tree while moving at slow speed in Newark Wednesday afternoon.

First responders found her unconscious at the scene and used Narcan to revive her.

Twelve special-needs students were on the bus, but none of them were injured.

The driver, 57-year-old Lisa Byrd, was taken to the hospital.

"Police officers did observe contraband, drug paraphernalia. She appears to be under the influence of a narcotic,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said.

Byrd is nowfacing several charges, including child endangerment, drug possession and driving while impaired.
