SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. -- Days after a Georgia detention officer's 16-year-old stepdaughter shot her in the head, authorities say she's now breathing on her own.

The Spalding County Sheriff's Office made the announcement about Amanda Moore's condition on Friday. She'd been airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center and at last check was said to be in stable condition.

Deputies added that Moore's brain isn't swelling, which was a concern early on, and that she's been able to follow her doctor's hand movements with her eyes. Still, the sheriff's office said that her injury is severe. They released this statement on Friday:

Because of what we have chosen as our profession, we all need to remember that regardless of whether you are certified, sworn, or civilian, things can change rapidly and often for the worst. Make sure that your families and friends know that you love them, don’t leave anything unsaid, and don’t leave anything on the table that needs to be fixed.
Amanda, like all of us that wear a badge or work in any part of this organization are warriors. We have a warrior mindset and a warrior spirit that drives us to fight the fight to the end, never give up, and survive. We need to do our part now to support Amanda, Larry, and their families by being prayer warriors. It is now our job to not only lift them up, but the Doctors and Nurses caring for Amanda as well. When we see tragic events on the news or on social media, we read the comments posted about prayers and wonder how many of those people have really said a prayer and how many are just commenting without substance. Today, and in the days to come, our prayers need to be substantive, for all who are in these families and for those who are caring for Amanda. Thank you for your continued support and continued prayers for Amanda, her family, and the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office.
