LEAF lends creativity to summer meals program in Arden

ARDEN, N.C. (WLOS) — A special event at Wellington Community Estates celebrates summer --and kids' creativity.

Wellington is a distribution site for Buncombe County Schools' Nutrition’s no-cost summer meals, and every Tuesday, volunteers help engage the kids with activities.

This"Be Well" summer meals program involves Avery's Creek Elementary School , the Girl Scouts and Buncombe County Schools as well as Wellington Estates.

Learning to share is part of the experience as kids also enjoy a free art program provided by LEAF's "Easel Rider" mobile art lab.

The art experience is something extra meant to stimulate learning.

"So that kids will not loose what they learned over the last academic year. it also builds friendship and trust and ensures they have healthy nutrition during lunch," said Girl Scout Mindy Smith.
