At 11:41 p.m. on the night of the Lunar Eclipse (Jan. 20), a meteor slammed into the moon-- and one of ABC 15's great photographers, Jordie Brotherton, captured it on video.

He was providing live shots for the 11 p.m. newscast and recorded the eclipse from 10:30 p.m. until 12 a.m.

After reading several articles about the meteor impacting the moon during the eclipse, he reviewed the video he shot and discovered he had captured the meteor's impact flash. NASA's Tony Rice confirms the meteor strike.

As rare as it seems, meteors hit the moon all the time. Since NASA started observing the impact flashes in 2005, there is an average of one meteor impact flash every two to three hours.

Meteors hitting the moon range in size from softballs to boulders.

The rare thing about this strike is that it was photographed during a full moon, when the usually bright moon surface overwhelms the glow of any fireball.
