Coming soon to the people of Goshen: Relief.

The city has taken steps to provide additional emergency funding during disasters.

In February of 2018, when record floods hit there, the city enacted its own flood relief fund to help with damage and property loss.

A number of property owners applied for it, but there was still around $100,00 left unused. So Mayor Jeremy Stutsman wanted to use that money to help those in Goshen deal with future disasters.

It's now called the "Emergency Relief Fund"

“We're looking at maybe we should just put it into a disaster relief,” said Jim Mckee, Goshen city council. “Let's say a half a block, heaven forbid, would burn down, downtown, we'd have some money to help these people. Or if we'd happen to have another flood, that would help us.”

The funds can be used after the mayor has declared a disaster emergency in Goshen, which would include floods, fires, snow storms, ice storms, tornadoes and even earthquakes.
