Work is now underway on a $10 million building and renovation project at Goshen High School.

Mainly because the school has run out of room. Right now, more than a dozen teachers have to travel from classroom to classroom because they don't have an assigned room of their own.

The project will not only add more rooms, but a new stairwell to alleviate congestion in the halls.

Work is underway inside and out at Goshen High School on a $10 million building project. The last couple years, space has been at a premium.

“The high school has grown quite a bit since our last major renovation. As our enrollment has grown we've been having to make do with the space we have,” said Alan Metcalfe, assistant superintendent.

A big part of the project calls for adding eight new classrooms. There just aren't enough to go around.

He says until recently at least 16 teachers don't have assigned classroom because there is not enough space. As a result, they have to wait to be assigned a classroom before they can begin the class, which sometimes results in a scheduling problem.

Metcalf says those teachers are being forced to travel from class to class, without a classroom of their own.

The project also calls for the addition of an advanced manufacturing lab, upgrading the art classrooms, and science areas. It also calls for adding a new stairwell to ease crowded hallways in one area.

“The three hallways are basically coming together and this is kind of a crunch point in between classes. Because that is really the only way to get from one wing of the building to the other. The addition of the stairwell at the other end will definitely alleviate that crowding that we have during passing periods,” said Metcalfe.

Construction will continue through the upcoming school year.

“It is supposed to be done next July. So about a year from now the new high school addition should be complete. The renovation of the manufacturing lab and the art and science areas should be done a year from November,” said Metcalfe.
