Two killer whales spotted off the coast of Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WSET) -- A Virginia Beach charter is going viral after capturing a killer whale off the coast.

Bill Pappas, Jr., the captain of Playin' Hookey Charters, posted photos and videos of two killer whales spotted off the coast of Virginia Beach Sunday.

Pappas said he and his crew were offshore seabass fishing when they encountered one orca.

They sailed parallel to them for a mile and then eased ahead to they could 'see nature's beauty in person.' When they started to head back to shore, they encountered another orca headed east.

"Truly one of the coolest things I've ever witnessed on the water," Pappas, Jr. wrote on Facebook. "Epic day on PHC, and we crushed the fish too."

Alexander Costidis, the Stranding Response Program Coordinator with the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, told WTKR that orcas aren't commonly seen in the Atlantic, but they are seen in all of the world's oceans.

"While not commonplace, orca are not strangers to the mid-Atlantic and southern US coast or the Gulf of Mexico and all of those waters are considered part of their primary range," he said.
