Remains of WWII soldier return to Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The remains of a fallen World War II soldier returned home Thursday.

A ceremony with the family of Sgt. John Kalausich and members of the West Virginia National Guard took place at Yeager Airport.

Kalausich and members of his squadron were involved campaign in 1945 in preparation of Allied troops crossing the Rhine River in Germany when their aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft weaponry.

A crash site was discovered in June 2016, and Kalausich’s remains were identified through DNA and dental analysis.

A visitation service will be held Friday at Bollinger Funeral Home in Charleston between 6 and 8 p.m. The funeral will be held Saturday at Christ Church United Methodist in Charleston beginning at 11 a.m.
