Bulldogs blank Sherando (Va.)
What was thought to perhaps be somewhat of a signifcant challenge for Class AAA No. 1 Martinsburg instead turned into yet another lopsided Bulldogs’ win as MHS rolled to a 37-0 victory Friday at Sherando (Va.).
Elijah Banks threw first-half touchdown passes to Teddy Marshall and Jarod Bowie and MHS took a 16-0 lead into halftime.
Naieem Kearney and Trey Sine each rushed for a touchdown in the second half and Bowie capped the scoring with a 99-yard punt return.
The victory was Martinsburg’s 45th straight as they improved to 3-0 this season.
Cabell Midland stops Spring Valley
The Class AAA No. 6 Knights started strong and held off No. 2 Spring Valley for a 28-21 win.
J.J. Roberts gave Cabell Midland (3-0) an early lead by scoring on an 88-yard run on the game’s first play.
After David Livingston’s 2-yard TD run pulled the Timberwolves (2-1) even, Roberts scored again on a long run — this one from 87 yards.
Roberts added a third rushing touchdown in the first half to send Cabell Midland into the break with a 21-7 lead.
Spring Valley closed to within 21-14 on a Nate Ellis 31-yard touchdown run, but the Knights responded with a 77-yard TD run from Hayden Hass on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Corbin Page hauled in a 23-yard TD reception to get the Timberwolves back to within one score, but that was as close as they’d come.
George Washington stuns Huntington
The Patriots picked up their first win of the season with a 31-30 upset over No. 3 Huntington.
It was GW’s first victory over the Highlanders in 13 years and came after Tay Blackwell scored on a 1-yard run to bring Huntington to within 31-30 in the fourth quarter. The Highlanders were set to go for two until a penalty backed them up, and the point-after kick was missed.
R.T. Alexander threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to Alex Mazelon that allowed GW to overcome an early 10-3 deficit and tie the game.
Alexander threw another TD pass to Mazelon in the second half and then fired one to Isaac Isabell from 10 yards to give the Patriots a 24-17 lead.
Blackwell’s 69-yard touchdown pass to Diallo Mitchell got the Highlanders (1-1) even, before Alexander found Brayden McCallister on a 34-yard TD pass — Alexander’s fourth touchdown pass of the night. That proved to be the winning score.
Capital hands Hurricane second straight loss
The Cougars’ Kerion Martin helped set the tone with first-quarter touchdowns on a 74-yard reception and 40-yard interception return and Class AAA No. 5 Capital topped No. 9 Hurricane, 33-21.
Capital quarterback Evan Landers also threw a 44-yard TD pass to Chance Knox in the first quarter, while tailback Tay Calloway had a 50-yard touchdown run in the period as well.
Capital (2-1) jumped in front 26-7 and was able to hold on from there.
Hurricane (1-2) got 135 rushing yards on 30 carries from Christian Hill.
Meadow Bridge upsets Midland Trail
Ayden Reddon and Nick White each rushed for 2-yard touchdowns and the Wildcats got a stellar defensive effort to upset Class A No. 3 Midland Trail, 14-2.
Meadow Bridge (2-1) recovered five fumbles in the win.
Colton Yoder rushed for 103 in the loss that saw the Midland Trail (2-1) offense held scoreless.
South Harrison tops Parkersburg Catholic for first win
The Hawks made a late defensive stand inside the 10-yard line to defeat Class A No. 10 Parkersburg Catholic, 28-21.
Landon McFadden rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns and caught another TD in the win. McFadden also had a pair of interceptions in the victory.
Parkersburg Catholic (1-2) lost for a second straight week despite 138 passing yards and 65 rushing yards from Jeb Boice.
