More ski territory opening in W.Va. this weekend

CANAAN VALLEY, W.Va. — The three largest ski resorts in West Virginia are going to be open this weekend. The ropes dropped for skiing and snowboarding at Canaan Valley Resort in Tucker County Friday morning. Winterplace in Raleigh County will open it’s ski season on Saturday.

“There’s a lot of new fresh territory for skiers and snowboarders this weekend in West Virginia,” said Joe Stevens with the West Virginia Ski Areas Association.

Snowshoe resort opened up the week of Thanksgiving, but will also open up it’s Silver Creek and Western Territory operation this weekend. Oglebay resort is slated to open December 26th.

“They’ve made a little bit of snow, but Oglebay will be coming on line during the Christmas holidays right on December 26th, weather permitting, is what they’re forecasting,” said Stevens.

The buzz in the West Virginia ski industry for this year has been the transformation of the Timberline Ski Resort in Tucker County. The facility was purchased out of bankruptcy by an Indiana firm which is planning to reopen the operation for the 2020-21 ski season. Stevens said it has been a well received action in Canaan Valley.

“It’s really created a great buzz in the industry. Everybody is excited having the folks from Perfect North on board and ready to open next season,” he said.
