OVID TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Michigan State Police officials were investigating a semi truck fire on I-69 Thursday morning.
Troopers were dispatched to northbound I-69 near the weigh station in Ovid Township, Branch County at 4:40 a.m.
Police said the FedEx trailer was hauling a double trailer that was transporting nitric acid in both trailers.
The rear trailer brakes caught on fire and the trailer became engulfed in flames.
North bound traffic on I-69 was shut down until Lakeland Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire and ensure that travel was safe.
One lane of the freeway was opened to traffic at 7:30 a.m.
HAZMAT (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality) responded to the scene for cleanup.
