3 killed in 2 separate eastern Jefferson County traffic crashes

Three people were killed Wednesday in two separate traffic crashes in eastern Jefferson county.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office on Thursday identified those victims as Adam Lee Roberts, Ashley Nicole Gills and Sue Lenox Curlee. Roberts and Gills died after a single-vehicle wreck in Pinson. Curlee was killed an hour earlier  in Trussville.

The first accident happened at 1:09 p.m. on Interstate 59 between Interstate 459 and Chalkville Road, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates. Curlee, 81, was driving her 2003 PT Cruiser northbound when she left the roadway, traveled into the woods line and hit a tree.

Curlee, who lived in Argo, was pronounced dead on the scene. Authorities said they don't yet know what led Curlee to veer off of the interstate. It remains under investigation by Trussville police.

The second crash happened just before 2 p.m. on Alabama 79 at Bradford Road, said Chief Deputy Randy Christian. Once on the scene, deputies found a wrecked Chevrolet Malibu.

Roberts, 37, and Gills, 27, were pronounced dead on the scene at 2:05 p.m. Christian said the initial information is that the car was traveling south on Highway 79 when the driver lost control, struck a rocky outcrop and then hit a tree.

That crash also remains under investigation. Roberts lived in Odenville; Gills in Pell City.
