The Birmingham Airport Authority is preparing to move forward with the construction of a quick-turn-around facility for rental car agencies.

The facility, which will be located in the former Eastwood Manor subdivision off 50th Street North, will give car rental agencies a singular place to wash and perform maintenance on vehicles.

"It is imperative that the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport continue to build on its successes by being an economic driver for the area and region while remaining steadfast on its commitment to community and environmental stewardship," said Birmingham Airport Authority Interim President/CEO Miguel Southwell.

Before this facility can be constructed, 153 cinder block duplexes have to be demolished, said airport authority board of directors chairman Michael Bell said.

More than half of the structures have already been purchased, according to the airport authority. They are currently being inspected and secured for clearing.

Bell said the car rental agencies are paying for the project.

"The airport has long been an economic engine for the community," he said. This project is a great initiative that focuses on improving efficiency and customer care for rental car agencies. This is yet another upgrade to further BHM to world-class status."

The airport authority will begin clearing the property on Friday.
