The rules are simple: Each performer has just five minutes to perform original solo comedy never to be seen on that stage again. What results are super weird sketches—think puppetry to modern dance—from veteran comics that have helped the four-year-old show develop a cult following. Westside’s Highwire Comedy Co. now hosts the event on the final Friday of the month, often with irreverent local improviser Andy Coen serving as emcee. highwirecomedy.com

1 A.M. Secret Show
Sure, the stand-up show that happens every Saturday at 1 a.m. at Morningside’s Smith’s Olde Bar isn’t so secret—but who’s performing always is. From Marc Maron to Margaret Cho, you never know who will drop by to join local veterans. Best part: There’s no two-drink minimum because it’s free. smithsoldebar.com

Ladie’s Night
What started as the ironically named sketch comedy team of Joel Ruiz, Zach Lamplugh, and Brian Emond showcasing three new videos a month has turned into a regularly sold-out event at Old Fourth Ward’s Village Theatre. Now, other local comics compete to premiere their latest sketch videos—the trio fills in with bits before and after—for one of the most varied comedy nights in the city. villagecomedy.com
