It’s been a challenging month for film in Atlanta. We’ve had snow, ice, and temperatures swinging from either end of the spectrum—not exactly conditions favorable to filmmaking. (No really, it’s been an issue.) But despite Mother Nature doing everything she can to delay the release of our yet-to-be favorite films and television shows, Georgia’s film industry soldiers on. Here’s what we saw in January.

New this month, a remake of the blaxploitation drama Super Fly (production code: GRAVITATIONAL) has begun filming. Helmed by prolific hip-hop music video director, Director X, Super Fly stars Trevor Jackson, Jason Mitchell, Allen Maldonado, Lex Scott Davis, Andrea Londo, Jacob Ming-Trent, and Omar Chapparo. We first spotted Super Fly in Chamblee on January 16, when it turned a Chinese restaurant into an after-hours club. Signs bearing GRAVITATIONAL were spotted near Third Rail Studios in Doraville during the middle of the month. On January 22, more signs were plopped in the Cumberland area, and the next day, filming took place in Vinings.

TBS has a new show in the works: Miracle Workers (MW). Starring Steve Buscemi, Daniel Radcliffe, and Geraldine Viswanathan, the series follows two low-level angels of “Heaven, Inc.” When God plans to destroy the Earth, the angels bet the planet’s survival on getting two unlikely humans to fall in love. Miracle Workers filmed in Norcross on December 29. A scene was shot in Piedmont Park on January 16.

CW’s Black Lightning (LOC) continued to film in town this month. Starring Cress Williams, China Anne McClain, and Nafessa Williams, the DC superhero show was spotted in Lithonia on January 3. It moved to Midtown on the 9th, near 17th Street. On January 15, crews worked out of Decatur and in Norcross between the 18th and the 19th. Production moved to Kirkwood the next day, and returned to Decatur on the 23rd.

Mile 22 (M22), the CIA action movie starring Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, John Malkovich, and Ronda Rousey, also carried over from December. It started the year in Hapeville before moving to Decatur between January 3-5. We also spotted filming in College Park between January 9-13.

Netflix’s Ozark (BRYDE/SUGARWOOD/BCP/WTH) might love to change its sign code, but since it primarily films at lakes Lanier and Allatoona, it’s easy to figure out. The Jason Bateman series mostly stuck to its usual spots, working out of Flowery Branch and Canton, but it did make a few trips closer to the city as well. On January 8, production shot in Midtown. On the 15th, crews worked out of the Jonesboro area. They also filmed in Norcross on January 17.

It finally happened. The double production of Avengers: Infinity War and the yet-to-be-titled Avengers 4 (FIGARO) has wrapped. We did, however, get to see one last hurrah from the films in January. Between the 10th and the 11th, Fairlie Poplar and Williams Street once again were transformed into the chaotic carnage of a superhero battlefield (check out the photos below). Aside from that scene, crews mopped up a few shots at Pinewood Atlanta Studios on January 3, 17, 18, and 21.

FOX’s new medical drama The Resident (TR) filmed mainly in Conyers this month, shooting there between January 8 and 9, as well as on the 17th. It shot at Midtown’s Woodruff Arts Center on January 23.

CBS’s MacGyver (EYE) also kept busy in January. Starting on the 4th, the series shot in Grant Park. January 12 took production to Pullman Yard. Between the 15th and the 16th, scenes were filmed around Chastain Park, with a basecamp at Chastain Horse Park. January 17 and 18 brought the show to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The Dynasty (CROSSEYE) remake was spotted in downtown Atlanta on January 10. Additional shots were filmed in Norcross on the 15th and on the 17th. Star (SOS) filmed a scene in Stockbridge on January 22. AMC’s new series Lodge 49 (LODGE 49) had signs up on Scott Boulevard in Decatur on the 12th. Sony’s Spider-Man-but-not-MCU Venom (LOZ) plopped signs at I-85’s Exit 61 near Fairburn on the 11th. Filming has since moved on to San Francisco. NBC’s Good Girls (GOOD GIRLS) was spotted in Buckhead on January 11. First Man (COLIN), about astronaut Neil Armstrong, filmed in Stockbridge during early January.

And finally this month, we’re proud to have a few locally filmed movies nominated for a combined seven Academy Awards. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was nominated for Visual Effects. I, Tonya pulled in a nod for Film Editing, as well as two nominations for Margot Robbie’s (Lead Actress) and Allison Janney’s (Supporting Actress) performances. (Janney also earned the film its only Golden Globe earlier this month.) Baby Driver also raked in three nominations for Film Editing, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. (By the way, to answer the perennial Oscar question: the difference between sound editing and mixing is that editing focuses on manipulating the sound in post-production; mixing refers to the actual recording and channel mixing of the sound.)
