Medina is a leader on environmental issues | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

In this time of partisanship and insufficient action on the climate crisis nationally, we need local leaders who foster rational dialogue and appreciate the urgency of climate action.

Kol Medina is that thoughtful voice of reason and action on the Bainbridge Island City Council. He displays broad and far-sighted vision and quickly grasps small but essential details of issues and projects.

As mayor, he has provided gentle but firm leadership, while being respectful toward Island citizens and city employees.

Being aware that immediate action on climate change is necessary, Kol has led efforts to meet this significant challenge. He was instrumental in creating the city’s Climate Change Advisory Committee, which is preparing a Climate Action Plan for our community. Since we will need to expand our transportation options, Kol supports the Island’s Sustainable Transportation planning.

Demonstrating his concern for balancing current development on our island with protecting its natural resources for the future, Kol has led the city council’s effort to protect our Island’s groundwater through the critical area ordinance with Aquifer Recharge Protection Areas. This ordinance enables landowners to develop their property while maintaining our island’s groundwater resources.

Kol was heavily involved with the comprehensive plan update, working to make the city code consistent with the revised comprehensive plan.

Because Kol Medina has proven to be a dedicated and capable public servant who gets things done, we support his re-election to city council.
