Four children and an adult were rescued from a house fire in Swindon in the early hours after neighbours heard the smoke alarm and called for help.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service said the fire started in the kitchen of a terraced house in Crombey Street.

Head of fire safety Seth Why said: "There was already a lot of smoke from the fire and that could have been a serious risk to life had the family not been woken up."

All five escaped without injury.

Paramedics were at the scene to monitor the occupants for the effects of smoke inhalation.

"Although this fire was relatively small, there was still a real danger to the occupants because of the smoke.

"Leaving cooking attended is never a good idea, as it can easily escalate to a fire, so we would remind people to not get distracted and take care while in the kitchen," said Mr Why.
